2021 Season Report
The Wayfarers section of Pontypool Golf Club under the captaincy of Mike Price, enjoyed a successful 2021 season, finishing Runners Up in their highly competitive league.
The season started well with a win over Bryn Meadows in the Cup 1st round, before drawing at home to a strong St. Mellon’s team in round 2, with the final match going to the final putt on the 18th, resulting in a halved match, which meant our exit as the away team goes through in the event of a draw in the cup, in order to avoid replays.
League games quickly followed at Coed Y Mwstwr, Newport, Whitehall and Tredegar Park. Our League was however a team short as St. Athan Golf Club had dropped out of the Wayfarers.
In the league we managed 3 home wins and a loss to the league winners, Coed Y Mwstwr.
Away from home we lost 3 games and won at Whitehall.
Outstanding performers over the season for the Wayfarers were Steve Witcombe, who played in every game winning 6, halving 2 and only losing 2 games all season.
James Jacob also enjoyed his Wayfarers debut season with 6 wins and 2 losses in his 8 games.
Thanks, must be given to all 19 players who turned out for Wayfarers, especially those who were press ganged into playing at the last minute, 4 of the 19 players only played 1 game.
The Wayfarers will now play all the other teams who also finished in the runners up position in their respected leagues this season in the 2022 season, keep an eye on the Wayfarers notice board for the full details of who those teams will be, presently the teams we know for sure are Woodlake Park, Pontnewydd, Bargoed, Maesteg, with two teams to join these once their final league games are played.
Once again, many, many thanks to all who played for the Wayfarers in the 2021 season.
